Towards the preservation of Tharu Basketry Culture

The Tarai, southern belt of Nepal, is famous for basketry crafts, Mithila arts, and natural fiber floorings. The Tharu women, indigenous in that region are skilled in making artistic baskets. These colorfully designed works are used in special ceremonies, and also for storing and carrying grains and vegetables. Baskets are, in fact, used as a showpiece of the traditional skills of Tharu girls, carried to her in-laws’ house as her precious dowry. Thus, these baskets reflect the ethnic identity, cultural and social values, and the heritage of the Tharu community.

NRDC in financial assistance of Indian Embassy in Nepal is undertaking a research study in Tharu basketry. The study not only examines the existing scenario of Tharu basketry, it also shall recommend pragmatic strategies for the preservation of indigenous skills. Moreover, the research shall also be helpful to empower Tharu women by exposing their traditional heritage which otherwise has been slowly disappearing. NRDC believes that the study shall open up doors of opportunities in the preservation and enhancement of Tharu basketry arts and crafts.
