The Conservation of Phewa Lake through Sustainable Use of Water Hyacinth (CPLSUW) project focuses to design a possible solution to control the widespread water hyacinth infliction in Phewa Lake by provisioning economic incentives through community-based actions. The project seeks to demonstrate that utilization measures like handicraft production and vermi-compost preparation can be highly successful to incentivize water hyacinth management in Phewa Lake. The one year project is primarily focused on the conservation of the nationally significant Phewa Lake through the removal of water hyacinth. The project therefore not only takes away the reputation of water hyacinth as a nuisance but also promotes it as a raw material for productive use for additional income to local community.

The project aims to form two functional groups cum enterprises, of which one will be women-led, comprising local Jalari and farmers groups. The functional committee will be tied into the network of various governmental and non-governmental lake management organizations. The project therefore attempts to pose a local solution to the rising environmental problem of invasive species infliction in various water bodies of Nepal.
